Understanding the condition

What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy occurs when the peripheral nerves — the network that carries signals between your brain, spinal cord, and the rest of your body — become damaged or irritated. The result is often pain, tingling, numbness, weakness, or a burning sensation, most commonly in the hands and feet.

Peripheral neuropathy can develop gradually or appear suddenly, and symptoms can range from mild, occasional tingling to pain or numbness that affects sleep, mobility, and daily activities. Because symptoms and underlying causes can vary from person to person, an individualized assessment is an important part of determining an appropriate approach to care.

Our approach

An Individualized Approach to Peripheral Neuropathy Care

People living with peripheral neuropathy may explore different options for managing their symptoms depending on the underlying cause, severity, and their overall health.

At Source Acupuncture, care may include traditional acupuncture and ATP Resonance BioTherapy®, a non-invasive therapy that uses low-level electrical frequencies. Treatment plans are individualized based on your assessment, symptoms, health history, and goals. These therapies may also be used as supportive care alongside other medical treatment when appropriate.

Types of neuropathy we work with

Peripheral neuropathy can have different underlying causes. At Source Acupuncture, treatment plans are individualized based on each patient’s symptoms, health history, and goals. Patients seeking care may present with concerns related to:

Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Nerve damage caused by prolonged high blood sugar, most often affecting the feet and legs.

Chemotherapy-Induced (CIPN)

Numbness, tingling, or pain in the hands and feet that develops as a side effect of certain chemotherapy drugs.

Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy

Nerve damage with no identifiable cause, even after a thorough medical workup.

Your treatment plan is individualized based on your assessment, symptoms, health history, and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does Peripheral Neuropathy Feel Like?

Most people describe it as numbness, tingling, “pins and needles,” burning, or weakness — usually starting in the feet or hands and sometimes spreading upward. Symptoms are often worse at night or after long periods of sitting or standing.

How is treatment planned for peripheral neuropathy?

Treatment is individualized based on your symptoms, health history, underlying conditions, and goals. Acupuncture and other supportive therapies may be included when appropriate. Individual responses to treatment vary.

Is Treatment Painful?

Acupuncture needles are hair-thin and typically cause little to no discomfort. Most patients find sessions relaxing rather than painful, and ATP Resonance BioTherapy® is non-invasive and pain-free.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

It depends on how long you’ve had symptoms, the underlying cause, and how your body responds. We’ll give you a realistic estimate after your first assessment and reassess your plan regularly.

Can I Continue Treatment Alongside Chemotherapy or My Current Medications?

Acupuncture may be considered as supportive care alongside other medical treatment when appropriate. Please let us know about your medical history, medications, and current treatments during your assessment so your care can be planned appropriately.

What Is ATP Resonance BioTherapy®?

It’s a non-invasive therapy that uses specific low-level electrical frequencies. At Source Acupuncture, it may be used alongside acupuncture as part of an individualized care plan.

What If My Neuropathy Has No Known Cause?

Peripheral neuropathy without an identified cause is sometimes referred to as idiopathic neuropathy. Your assessment will consider your symptoms, health history, current medical care, and individual goals when determining an appropriate treatment plan.
